Don’t Rock The School!

In Daily Notes on October 27, 2008 at 5:34 pm

Part of the inspiration behind setting up this blog, is my husband’s daily stress as he just tries to do a good job as a teacher. He draws the line between what’s right and wrong. He’s one of at least two folks at his school, who are gay. There is some support from progressive folks, and there is plenty of resistance from the ultra-conservatives. For weeks, both my husband and his female co-worker have endured snide remarks and directly abusive comments. All making it clear, that there are a bunch of pleebs who have no mind of their own. One teacher violated school rules and had displayed vote “yes” on his classroom desk. Plenty of folks have vote “yes” propoganda posted on their cars, on display for parents and passing traffic. It wasn’t until my husband and his co-worker posted their large vote “No” messages, that the phone calls began pouring in from the parents. Just a short time ago, the school principal, asked both my husband and his co-worker to move their vehicles across the street from the school property. The response to this request was a simple, “When those who have “vote Yes” move their cars, we’ll move ours.” It is amazing that these people who have worked with my husband for many years, are turning their backs on him… on his lesbian co-worker… over taking rights AWAY from us. These are SCHOOL TEACHERS.. whose own union says to vote “no on prop 8” and who are teaching today’s kids about the U.S. Constitution.
